How to prepare for the CSS MPT

The MPT is a screening test, not the CSS itself — you need to clear it comfortably, not perfect it. With 27 September 2026on the calendar, here's a realistic plan that respects your time. No guarantees, no shortcuts — just what actually moves the needle.

The plan

Five steps that work

1 · Diagnose before you study

Take one full-length MPT mock under real conditions before opening a single book. A cold score tells you exactly which of the seven areas are costing you marks — far more useful than a generic study plan. You cannot fix what you have not measured.

2 · Attack your weakest areas first

General Science & Ability and English carry the most weight. If your diagnostic shows gaps there, that is where an hour of study returns the most marks. Work weakest-first, not favourite-first.

3 · Practise in short, spaced sets

The MPT rewards broad recall across many topics. Short daily sets with spaced review beat occasional marathon sessions — you remember more, for longer, with less burnout. Revisit questions you got wrong right before you would forget them.

4 · Rehearse the clock

One minute per question is tight. Do timed full-length mocks so pacing becomes automatic and you stop losing easy marks to time pressure. Because there is no negative marking, never leave a blank — attempt everything.

5 · Review every mistake with the why

A wrong answer you understand is worth more than ten you skimmed. Read the explanation, note why the tempting wrong option was wrong, and move the concept into your review queue.

Ground your plan in the syllabus and the marking rules, and lock the dates into your calendar.
